Deborah Herman has been a publishing industry insider for over thirty years. While in first-year law school, she discovered a love for writing personality profiles of local comedians to remain sane. This guilty pleasure led to a dual-degree in law with a Masters’s Degree in Journalism. The goal was to be the next Joan Didion or Truman Capote, but the chance to write creative nonfiction did not come until 2017, with her bestselling collaboration with the youngest member of the Manson Family cult. Herman is also the author of twelve other traditionally published nonfiction books ranging from parenting to Spiritual Writing.
Deborah Herman worked with her husband, literary agent Jeff Herman, curating and developing projects for many years. The Jeff Herman Literary Agency has sold over 1,000 nonfiction books and is a leader in writer education. Jeff Herman is the author of the industry bible, Jeff Herman’s Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents, now in its 28th edition with over a half-million copies sold. Deborah Herman is a regular contributor to that tome and co-authored with Jeff the other industry must-have Write the Perfect Book Proposal: Ten Proposals that Worked and Why now in its third edition with over two hundred and fifty thousand copies sold.
Jeff and Deborah Herman are cofounders of a social network for writers aptly titled www.writersnetworking.com.
As the industry changed with the internet’s burgeoning, Deborah Herman sought to understand this new world. After three MBA level intensives through the Rutgers mini MBA program, Herman learned about digital marketing, social media, and entrepreneurship. Her indie publishing company Micro Publishing Media, Inc, was born to publish niche titles in various imprints.
As a former agent and now a publisher with an understanding of the digital world, Herman discovered a gap in how authors could succeed. Author Branding Solutions became the next natural step. Herman’s unique experience of all sides of the industry, from idea to sales to an ongoing fanbase, made her the right person to help authors embrace these new opportunities. Author Branding Solutions build platforms that get noticed.
Herman is a thankful homebody who enjoys working surrounded by dogs, cats, and her literary agent husband Jeff in the peaceful Berkshires of Massachusetts.
