As Associate Director for EveryLibrary Peter advocates for libraries on local, state, and national levels. He provides pro bono coaching and consulting to librarians, boards, associations, citizen ballot committees, and watchdog groups, helping them to fight censorship and develop effective messaging, political strategies, and build strong community and political support for library funding. As Executive Director of the Salt Lake City Library from 2016-2021, Peter applied an equity lens to board and policy development, organizational structure, and operations garnering a Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Public Administrators (ASPA) for his work in eliminating inequitable barriers to service.
In 2019, Peter was honored with the Utah Library Association’s (ULA) Legislative Award for Excellence in Political Affairs and Library Advocacy and ALA’s Gerald R. Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award (as Chair of the Utah Library Association Advocacy team), for his work leading the successful fight to have EBSCO research databases reinstated in school libraries after unsubstantiated challenges of inappropriate materials led to a one-month blackout Utah students and teachers.
